About
Portage Equity was founded to acquire and operate one great service business.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and Portage Equity. I'm an engineer and I have a passion for leading teams. I love the growth, relationship building, and satisfaction that comes with solving difficult problems as a team. I've been fortunate to have many of these opportunities so far in my career. I'm now looking forward to using this experience to lead a company and tackle the exciting challenges that come along with that.
I grew up in Houston, Texas, and got a degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University. Following college, I went back to Houston to work in the oil and gas industry for TechnipFMC. I worked there for six years laying deepwater subsea pipelines all over the world including the Gulf of Mexico, China, Australia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. The job involved managing large construction and engineering teams in dangerous environments on large offshore construction vessels that cost over $1 million per day to operate. I spent over 200 days offshore during this period and occasionally didn't see land for over 50 days at a time. It was a stressful and at times grueling experience, but it was an incredible leadership opportunity for me and I grew a lot as a person during this time.
I decided that I wanted the next step in my career to be on land, so I went back to school and got my MBA at Rice University, in Houston. Following business school, I decided that I wanted to use my operational and financial experience to buy and operate a small business.
I founded my first fund, called Buck Jack Capital, to buy and operate a business. Together with my business partner and cousin, we bought a pediatric healthcare practice in Colorado called the Shandy Clinic, which I operated as President. See the case study in the link below to learn more about the acquisition. During my time at Shandy, we grew the practice, throughout the COVID pandemic, to 330 employees and treated over 3000 children a year. I'm incredibly proud of this experience and the benefits that we provided to children and families across Colorado.
After leaving the Shandy Clinic, I got married to my amazing wife, Allyson. Allyson's family is from Massachusetts and we are moving back to Boston to be near her family, which is why I'm looking for businesses in the New England area.
I'm now on to what I think is the most exciting step in my career, which is starting my second fund, Portage Equity, with the goal of acquiring and operating a New England area business that I can grow for the remainder of my career.

Why the name Portage Equity?
The word Portage is the practice of carrying a canoe or load over land, between two bodies of water.
I grew up going to a small cabin in the deep woods in Canada. I love spending time at the cabin, but getting there involves traveling across two lakes as well as traversing a portage in between. The portage is challenging, but my family views it as a rite of passage and it makes the destination even better.
Similarly, transitioning family businesses to new owners is challenging and comes with many obstacles to navigate. Successful transitions require a disciplined well-structured process that I seek to achieve and in the end produce a great outcome for everyone.
